Common situations
Four situations we are most often called into
The estate runs on two people
One knows the integrations, one knows the escalations, and neither can take leave in the same fortnight. A succession problem, not a software one.
Change waits for a window
A half-day field change waits six weeks: one test environment, no regression pack, a monthly change board. Release engineering was never funded.
The data was never finished
Go-live came before hierarchy, classifications and job plans were complete, and phase two lost its budget. Capital cases are now rebuilt by hand.
The upgrade keeps slipping
Maximo 7.6 to MAS has been on the plan for three years and outlived two sponsors. Each restart pays again for the same customisation inventory.
Two of these together indicate an under-supported estate rather than a failing one. The remedy is a procurement decision, not a rebuild.
Where to start
Three places an engagement starts
Clients move between these as the estate matures. The third column is the one worth reading.
Implementation, or the move to MAS
Upgrade and implementation →You are on it if
You have a funded programme and an internal team who will own the estate afterwards.
The wrong move here
Starting configuration from an empty database. It puts your first design review six months out, when change is expensive.
MaxIron Cloud, managed platform
MaxIron Cloud →You are on it if
You want MAS running next month and no operating burden: monthly cost, environments in hours, our on-call rota.
The wrong move here
Buying a managed service when the platform has to live inside your own tenancy. Host it yourself and take our support instead.
Support on an estate you already run
Support and partnership →You are on it if
It is live, it mostly works, and nobody can say what will break on the next upgrade.
The wrong move here
Buying a service desk. A queue answers tickets; it does not tell you a failing integration stopped clearing overnight.
Release engineering
Why a half-day change takes six weeks
6 weeks
One test environment, no regression pack, a monthly change board
Next release
Environments on demand, a regression pack, recorded approvals
Release engineering is what separates a well-run Maximo estate from a struggling one. On the estates we run it is standard equipment, so a Monday problem points at one named change rather than fifteen batched together.
Six weeks is the pattern we are most often called into. The mechanism is environments on demand, pipelines and change control.
How an engagement runs
Five steps, from a short upgrade to a multi-year programme
- 01
Learn the operation
Planners, supervisors and technicians in their own areas. Work order volumes and the top ten escalations before any requirements document.
- 02
Start from a baseline
Configuration begins from a curated baseline, so your first review is against a working operating model rather than a blank screen.
- 03
Build in the open
Short cycles, environments on demand, configuration promoted through pipelines. You see the build while changing it is still cheap.
- 04
Rehearse the cutover
Migration, integrations and rollback run end to end against real timings. If the rehearsal fails, we move the date.
- 05
Operate and improve
Monitoring in front of the service desk, a fixed release cadence, and a named service owner at your review.
The tooling behind steps three to five is our own. See how we deliver.

Fit assessment
Where MaxIron fits, and where another supplier is stronger
Named so fit can be assessed before a procurement cycle is spent on the wrong shortlist.
Platform selection is still open
As an IBM Gold Partner our view on which EAM product to buy carries an obvious commercial interest. Take independent advice on selection, then come back once Maximo is the decision.
Day rate decides the award
We staff senior. Architects who have run these programmes cost more per day than a team learning on your estate. Where price per day decides it, we are unlikely to be competitive.
The supplier is expected to own asset decisions
Criticality, asset strategy, safety cases and regulatory positions stay with you. Those accountabilities transfer to a supplier only on paper, and an audit finds the gap.
Only the software is in scope
Most disappointing EAM outcomes trace to process and data. Where planning, work management and asset data are excluded by instruction, a new platform reproduces the current operating model.
Questions we are asked first
- What does MaxIron do?
- We implement IBM Maximo and MAS, upgrade legacy Maximo estates, run them on MaxIron Cloud, and support them afterwards. Mobile, integrations, data migration, licensing and business process work sit around that. One accountable team, full lifecycle. All services.
- Are you an IBM partner, and can you supply MAS licences?
- Yes. IBM Gold Partner, Partner Plus company 8294, and a MAS reseller. We advise on AppPoints sizing and BYOL as well as supplying licences. See MAS AppPoints and licensing. Certificates and listings are on recognition and credentials.
- We are on Maximo 7.6. What is the first step?
- An inventory of customisations and integrations. That sets cost and risk, not the version number. We produce it, quote a fixed price against it, and can run a trial upgrade in a test environment. If the business case will not land this year, Maximo 7.6 Extended Support keeps you supported.
- Do you only work on Maximo Manage?
- Manage is most of our work. We also deliver and operate Monitor, Predict, Health, Visual Inspection and the IoT layer, plus industry solutions such as Renewables and Field Service Management. See the MAS suite overview and our own products.
Start with a review of the estate.
Thirty minutes on the version you are running, what is queued, and who holds it today. We will say which of the three routes fits, the shape of the work, and where another supplier is the stronger option.
Useful to have on the call
- The Maximo or MAS version you are on, and how many environments
- Roughly how many users and sites, and work orders per month
- The three changes that have been waiting longest, and why
- Any audit, regulatory or support-expiry date already fixed
